If you loved the Game of the Thrones TV series, here is another reason why you should plan a visit to Spain – there are a lot of locations in Spain that were used during the filming of the series. Though these filming locations are scattered all over Spain, they can be narrowed down to a few cities; here we are presenting the locations in the form of an itinerary that can help you plan a 2 day self guided tour of GOT’s best filming locations in Spain.
In order to do the trip comfortably, a rental vehicle is an important necessity. Not only cheap, a car hire will make it easy for you to do things according to the plan and will allow you to make last minute changes without any inconveniences and delays.
1. Start your tour with Seville
Seville was already a really popular destination even before the GOT days, and as expected, after that, the footfall has obviously increased manifolds especially after season 5.
Visit Royal Alcázar of Seville which was used as House Martell, the residence of one of the 7 kingdoms of the ruling house of Dorne; this stunning structure is a mixture of both Christian and Moorish architectural styles. After that visit Maria de Padilla’s baths – it is the place where the revenge of Oberyn was plotted by Sand Snakes.
Pond of Mercury, also known as El Estanque de Mercurio, is the next place you should visit. This pond consists of a statue of the Roman god Mercury which appears in one of the episodes of Season 5. This bronze statue was designed by Diego de Pesquera in 1576 and was casted by Bartolomé Morel.
The Hall of Ambassadors, also known as El Salón de Embajadores, was featured in the Game of the Thrones series as ‘the Throne Room’. Its ornate gold dome is a marvel in itself; it is in this very hall where Jamie meets Prince Doran for the very first time. This was also featured in Season 5 of the series. There was not much done as the hall is already loaded on grandeur, just curtains, plants and furniture etc were added.
Located beneath the Patio del Crucero, the Baths of Lady María de Padilla consists of rainwater tanks; it is said that the tanks were named after the mistress of King Peter of Castile who used to bathe in them. It was used in season 5’s episode 6 as the place where Ellaria Sand meets her daughters and plot a plan to revenge Martell’s murder.
The Seville Shipyard, or Las Atarazanas de Sevilla, dates back to the 13th Century and was built for the voyages undertaken to explore the New World. It was used in Season 7 as King Landing’s crypt & dungeons of the Red Keep.
2. Visit Cordoba City and its attractions next
In 2016, Castillo de Almodóvar was used as the backdrop for the ancestral home of House Tyrell and some parts were also used as the ancestral home of House Lannister – Casterly Rock.
The Castle is of Muslim Origins and the present location where it stands located was historically the site of a Roman Fort which existed tilll 760. It underwent numerous expansions in the Middle ages and in the 1930s, it was restored fully under the direction of an architect Adolfo Fernández Casanova.
The Roman Bridge of Cordoba was used as the Long Bridge of Volantis in the series through CGIs of course. It featured in season 5 when Tyrion and Varys were traveling from Pentos to Meereen. Feeling trapped in the carriage for weeks, they both walk through the bridge and come across various houses, shops, a brothel and a preacher (not in the same order). All the scenes were in fact shot in studio, and the background & the aerial shots of the bridge were added later on through the CGIs.
3. Continue your tour by Covering beautiful Locations of Girona
Girona Cathedral was used as the Great Sept of Baelor. It is the scene in the series where you see 200 Tyrell soldiers following Jaime Lannister who is shown riding up the stairs on the horseback. This construction of the cathedral started in the 11th Century and ended in the 13th century; initially the architectural style was Romanesque and by the 13th century the focus was more on the Gothic style. This cathedral has the widest Gothic nave in the world.
The staircase from Bisbe José Cartañà Street (used as one of the Streets of Braavos) is the most popular GOT location in Girona. This is the place where Arya is shown begging for alms in the 6th season; when you visit don’t eb at all surprised if you see plenty of people sitting on the first step doing their own version of Arya’s scene.
The scene that takes place on the staircase of this street is possibly the most recreated by tourists who follow the Game of Thrones route through Girona. Many visitors to the city sit on the corner of the first step, pretending to be Arya begging for alms through the streets of Braavos.
Port of Braavos market was shown in the 7th season of the Game of Thrones; in the scenes, Arya is shown wandering about the market looking for a way out of the city. The location shown is directly in front of the Arab Baths entrance and Rei Ferran el Catòlic Street and the Archaeological Walk of Girona were used as the backdrop for Port of Braavos.
4. Explore wonderful GOT locations of Almeria
First location in Almeria that was used in the TV series was El Chorrillo, it was used as the backdrop for the city of Vaes Dothrak. It is the place where Khaleesi was being kept captive by the Dothrakhi people. Yes, the iconic scene where the Khaleesi appears from one of the burning cabins, unarmed and unaided, was also shot here.
For the same season, the Table Tower Roldán of Cabo de Gata was also used as Meereen. It appears in the scenes where people attacking Meereen (Masters of Yunkai, Astapor, and Volantis) surrender to Daenerys.
Another GOT location worth-visiting is Alcazaba which was used as Sunsepear, the capital of the Kingdom of Dorne. It is the place where Khaleesi’s messenger Varis, Ellaria Arena and Olenna Tyrell meet and join hands to defeat Cersei Lannister.
The “desserts” in Almeria were also used in season 5, where Daenerys is kidnapped & taken back to Vaes Dothrak.
5. Next City in the list of GOT locations is Caceres
This historic city, which is loaded with castles and surrounded by untouched landscapes and lakes was used in season 7. The city is surrounded by castle walls, has cobbled streets flanked by medieval palaces, buildings and houses. This city is now the UNESCO’s World Heritage site.
Arco de la Estrella and Plaza de Santa María are the most popular places in Caceres which featured in the Game of Thrones TV series. It was used as King’s Landing in the scenes where Euron Greyjoy appears in the king’s landing with captives Yara Greyjoy, Ellaria Sand and her daughter; they are dragged along the streets and abused by the crowd. This scene starts at Plaza de Santa María and ends in Arco de la Estrella.
Trujillo Castle was also used in season 7 of GOT; this castle is located about 40 minutes drive from Caceres. This place was used in the scenes where the ‘unsullied’ are shown invading the Casterly Rock. Los Barruecos was also used in season 7 as the place where Khaleesi attacks Jamie Lanister and his army; this Loot Train Battle scene is regarded as the best battle scene especially because of the dragons.
6. Don’t forget to visit GOT locations of Peniscola
Penoscola was used as Meereen in GOT season 6, actually its state of Slaver’s Bay. It was used in the scenes when Khaleesi enters Meereen with her army, a place where there are free men, each one accompanied by at least 3 slaves.
The Artillery Park is a botanical park which was used in season 6 where Tyrion, Missandei, and Gray Worm are shown strolling while discussing the future of the city.
